FOURTEEN

TALIA

“Oh, honey, you look rough. Even by your standards.”

I stood and greeted Drew with a double air kiss, trying to ignore the fact that he’d basically said I look like shit. I had a hard time sleeping last night. Partly because I was back in my childhood bed and partly because I couldn’t stop thinking about Cole and the way his gaze had caressed my body before I’d left him there with hunger in his eyes.

The irony that he was in my bed, under the sheets I’d slept in the night before, wasn’t lost on me either.

“Always a charmer, Louis.” I took my seat. “Asher texted me; he should be here in a few minutes.”

“I can’t believe how nonchalantly you just made that statement. And I can’t believe he’s meeting you personally. You would think he’d send his assistant or something. Seems a little suspect.”

“He’s just a guy, Drew. And I’m sure he’s just making it a point to meet with me because I’m a friend of a friend.”

“Just a guy—Chuck! The Asher Kade is not just a guy! He is a genius in the fashion industry and has the cheekbones of a Greek god.” He fanned himself with the paper menu.

“I think you have nice cheekbones and style, but you don’t see me calling you the Drew Mitchell.”

He touched his cheekbones and brought his chin to his shoulder. “I knew there was a reason I liked you.”

“Here he comes. Remember to keep your drooling in check,” I urged as I stood to greet Asher.

Although, I’d understand if Drew couldn’t keep it in check. Asher was more handsome in person than in pictures, if that was at all possible. He was tall with lean muscle. His dark brown hair was tied up in a man bun and his sharp jaw was peppered in stubble. The handsome designer flashed a brilliant white smile as he walked toward us with confidence.

His eyes left mine as he slowly scanned my body. It felt both sexy and uncomfortable. Sexy because, well, he looked like that. And uncomfortable because this was strictly a professional relationship.

He extended his hand and I took it. “Talia, you look even more beautiful in person.” He kissed my hand and Drew’s jaw dropped.

“I wasn’t aware you had seen pictures of me. But thank you.”

“Justine showed me a few pictures of the two of you from your college days, and then I took it upon myself to look you up on social media, to make sure you were legit, of course.”

Of course.

“I must say your pictures, while stunning, don’t do you justice,” he continued.

We stared at each other for a moment, not saying a word.

“Well, at least now we know why he personally met with you,” Drew said under his breath.

“What was that?” Asher asked.

Shit. Did he hear that?

“Oh, nothing. Thank you for coming to meet with us, Mr. Kade. This is Drew. We’re very excited to have the opportunity to work with you.”

“Please, call me Asher. It’s nice to meet you, Drew.
